Prairie School freshmen and sophomore students headed to downtown Denver on Friday to visit the History Colorado Center and the State Capitol.
The focus for the day: Democratic Principles. Freshmen and sophomore students spent time in class leading up to the trip analyzing some of the principles at the heart of our country and government: Liberty, Rights, Property, Security, Rule of Law, the Common Good, etc
In the museum students analyzed each exhibit looking for evidence of these principles, and how at times these principles can come into conflict. Like the Amache-Granada Internment Camp exhibit which presents the history of Japanese Americans who were detained during World War II, a great example of how the principles of Security and Rights often come into conflict.
On our walk from History Colorado to the Capitol we reflected on how those principles might be applied differently in an urban setting like downtown Denver as compared with at home.
And at the Capitol we walked the unique rose-marble halls, met Senator Sonnenberg and Representative Pelton, and considered how our democratic principles can guide those that, for a term, work in that building.
