Vocational Agriculture 1

Vocational Agriculture 1 is an introductory freshman level course. This course involves units in FFA, Supervised Agriculture Experience, Record Keeping, Power, Structural and Technical Systems, Soils and Animal Systems. Students are also required to start their own experiential learning or SAE that they can maintain through out their high school career and keep records on. Students also become familiar with the different activities in FFA that they can participate in including the Creed Speaking Contest, Quiz Bowl, and Career Development Events. Students also spend time in the shop constructing a Saw Horse and doing and introductory unit in welding. This basic course has endless possibilities for the beginning Agricultural Education students.

The following grading scale will be used in this course:  100-91%=A, 90-81%=B, 80-71%=C, 70-61%=D, 60% and below=F. 


Grades will be based on the following:

  • Assignments- 25%
  • Exams- 20%
  • Quizzes-15%
  • Class Participation- 10 points per day. (20%)
  • Notebooks- 5%
  • Record Book- 15%


Academic dishonesty will NOT be tolerated! Every student is expected to do their own work and complete it by the given deadlines.  Failing to do so will result in a zero on the assignment and for the day!!!


*Assignments will be turned in to the front desk each day.  Any assignment that is not completed in class will be expected to be done as homework and turned in the next day. 

* NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED!!! All work must be turned in as you are walking into class or you will receive a zero!!!

* I am willing to work with you on missed assignments; however, you must talk with me!!! If you are going to be gone and you know you are going to be gone, visit with me ahead of time!!!


                                *Exams will be given at the end of each unit!

*A study guide will be prepared for you for the unit.  You will need to use the     information given in your notebook to help you prepare for the exam. 

                                *There will be no retakes available.


                                *Quizzes will be given in order to help you prepare for your final exam for the unit. 

                                *They will be announced and unannounced!!

              Class Participation:

* Students will be given 10 point each day based on their work attitude.  In order to gain the full 10 points you must be on task and respectful!! Students will be given one warning and then their points will begin to decrease for the day when appropriate behavior is not observed!

*In order for students to receive their participation points they MUST turn in their daily goal card at the end of the class period.  Failing to do so will result in a zero for the day.


*Notebooks will be graded at the end of each unit! 

*You will be required to keep up with your organization in order to maintain the best possible grade!

                Record Books:

*Records will be graded once a month to make sure everyone is keeping up with the records needed for their SAE.


Classroom Rules and Policies:

  1. LEARN!  I want every student to have a great learning experience in this classroom.  I want them to be able to feel like they can talk to me at all times and that I want them to experience academic success.  Please, if you are struggling with a certain content area come and visit with me and we will work out a way that we can help your learning advance.  
  2. Given that I would like each student to be successful in their academic achievement in agricultural education, every student is expected to participate in every activity that is assigned through instruction. 
  3. BE RESPECTFUL!!!  All students will not only be expected to give other students respect when they are speaking in class but also to me when I am instructing.  Talking in class while someone is talking or presenting will NOT be tolerated.  Failing to be respectful to other students will result in a zero for your participation grade. 
  4. BE ON TIME!!!
  5. Given that FFA and SAE are integral to the curriculum in agricultural education all students will be expected to participate in both aspects.   Students will be expected to participate in the annual FFA fundraiser that is held each year.
  6. Students will need to follow the National FFA Dress Code when participating in professional FFA activities.  If official dress is not required I will tell you that before the event.  However, all professional events will require official dress.
  7. ALL students will be expected to have a satisfactory Supervised Agriculture Experience Program.  They will also need to keep records on this SAE in order to obtain a grade in this class, as well as any other activities that will be associated with the SAE.  If you have questions please contact me with those, I am willing to work with you and help you locate one if you do not have access to an SAE. I will also do a visit with each student and their SAE at least once a year. 
  8. All electronic devices are strictly prohibited to use in class. Please shut off and put away all cell phones and I-Pods that may distract from the learning process. 


Shop Rules and Policies

  1. Each student must pass a safety test for each piece of equipment with a 100% before working in the shop. 
  2. Safety glasses will be worn at ALL times when in the shop, even during clean-up.
  3. Each student will have their own pair of safety glasses with their name on them.  They are expected to take care of them and return them to their proper spot each day.  You are NOT allowed to wear another person, so keep track of yours! If you lose yours you must pay to replace them.
  4. No horseplay will be allowed in the shop!!
  5. No use of equipment will be allowed unless the instructor is in the shop.
  6. Must check with the instructor before using any tools.
  7. Plans and bills of materials are required for all shop projects!
  8. Students are not allowed to leave school for any supplies.  Bring all supplies needed for your project before or after school.
  9. Everything in the shop has a place and should be returned to its place.
  10. Students will have a clean-up task to perform each week; the shop must be cleaned before you can leave class for the day. 
  11. All students are expected to wear coveralls and work boots while working in the shop, the coveralls and work boots must be kept clean and in good condition. 
  12. Any student working on projects after or before school is expected to replace all tools and equipment where they found them. In order to work before or after school you must approve this with the instructor.
  13. You will be given a shop record card with assigned skills.  Each week you will be required to have certain skills accomplished as well as procedures of your project completed.
