Freshman English

As freshmen, students will combine their reading and writing into one class.  They are required to read a variety of formats including units on Fiction, Nonfiction, Short Stories, Drama, and Mythology.  Students will read selections from Prentice Hall Literature.  These selections will teach rhetoric and grammar skills, as well as give students an introduction to literary terms and how to find them.  Writing skills will be developed by composing various responses to literature, research essays, analysis, persuasion, and debate pieces.  Classic novels to be read include Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and Harper’s To Kill a Mockingbird.  A variety of visual and written projects will be required throughout the year in addition to group projects and oral presentations.
